Now in its fourth year, the Chemistry Graduate School Prep Club was created to help prepare, support, and mentor chemistry undergraduates, especially students at predominately undergraduate institutions (PUIs), for graduate studies in the chemical sciences.
The monthly sessions are facilitated by CCHF and non-CCHF chemistry graduate students at Emory University. The session topics range from preparing a personal statement to applying for summer undergraduate research opportunities to deciding between a PhD. and PhD/MD graduate program. The undergraduates also tour CCHF labs and speak with faculty and students at Georgia Tech and Emory. In addition, CCHF graduate students and postdocs at partner institutions outside of Atlanta can serve as remote guest speakers, participating via the CCHF videoconferencing system, Vidyo.
The club is based at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia and enrolls approximately two dozen undergraduates each year. This past year, the Club expanded to include chemistry undergraduates at Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta. At least one Prep Club participant is offered a CCHF Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research fellowship each year.
